Fashion + Age

In February 2020, we wanted to answer the question 'Does fashion have an ageism problem?'. With fashion and beauty alike heralding youth, our writers challenged this notion and celebrated ageing.

“Men don’t age better than women, they’re just allowed to age”. This profound quote by Carrie Fisher highlights a problem so tragically normalised within fashion that it often goes ignored. The fashion and beauty industry’s “shameful sidelining” of older consumers could cost £11bn over the next 20 years, according to research by the International Longevity Centre (ILC-UK).

 

Despite a slight increased use in older models for marketing, this has never become a norm and older models are still often used as a token of age representation. With the inevitably of an ageing population and an arguably more style conscious society than ever, how can fashion be more inclusive and more desirable for older generations?
