Microblog: What is Love Actually?

Love comes in all shapes and forms and is needed by humans to function, dependency on each other results in great relationships and things created. Love itself scientifically can be seen as secretion of the oxytocin which is seen greatly with mothers and their new born children, but also produced in sexual relations therefore showing its vital to activities of bonding in a variety of relationship types.

Love in Disney

Depicted in Disney movies as a prince and princess, Love itself is shown in the lights of happiness and positive experience leading to the heart beating in response to your lover.

However love itself can be found in not just romantic relationships, but also in friendships and parent-children relationships. Disney itself also makes the mistake of showing love as being a very easy thing to maintain/achieve in romantic relationships however this is far from the case as love itself requires effort and care. Furthermore it shows love as a solution to all problems, a big one being another person loving you will make you love yourself. This is a dangerous idea for one, furthering the idea of a “happily ever after”. However scientists believe love is produced from the brain rather than the heart itself however its more romantic for the heart to do the talking .

What is love, actually?

Harvard scientists claim love to be split into 3 types: Lust, Attraction and Attachment. Each element having its own designated chemical hormones behind it. Lust can be seen as sexual attraction stemming from the sex organs in a human and our evolutionary need for survival of species i.e. reproduction. This includes the use of the hypothalamus in production of oestrogen and testosterone .

Secondly love in attraction; depicted through reward behaviour of high levels of dopamine and norepinephrine . These chemicals combine make us feel even more energetic, anxious and can lead to insomnia. Lastly produced is feelings of attachment to another which results in long term relationships in comparison to flings produced from lust and attraction. Attachment itself is present in not just romantic relationships, but also between friends and parent/guardian child relationships. However love itself is not all positive as it can also result in feelings of jealousy and irrationally , the flipside of these hormones: dopamine and oxytocin.
